The Senior Technical Writer is primarily responsible for the technical communication of the OSI products. Secondarily, the Senior Technical Writer is responsible for assisting various departments with their documentation needs and in-house support and training for Microsoft Office products.
The Senior Technical Writer follows industry standard technical publication processes and style guides. To succeed, the Senior Technical Writer must have a strong attention to details, a keen eye for formatting and usage of graphics, a commitment to quality, and the ability to collaborate with a diverse group of professionals to produce high quality end-user and internal publication. The Senior Technical Writer should also exhibit leadership, organizational skills and stakeholder management skills.
• Plan, develop, and publish high-quality technical documentation for OSI products, including operator guides, technical manuals, and internal publications, in PDF and web-based formats.
• Collaborate with Engineering, Sales, Project Management, and other stakeholders to gather information, define documentation requirements, and ensure accuracy and usability.
• Research and interpret complex technical information from subject matter experts, design documents, and product releases to create clear, user-focused content.
• Maintain documentation standards, templates, configuration control, and audit records in accordance with OSI processes and quality requirements.
• Lead document planning activities, including release documentation, document trees, and review cycles, while ensuring timely delivery.
• Provide mentorship and guidance to Junior and Intermediate Technical Writers, promoting best practices and continuous improvement.
• Support cross-functional teams with technical communication, document management, and the effective use of documentation tools and software.
• Identify opportunities to enhance technical communication processes, standards, and tools, while staying current with industry trends and best practices.
• Post-secondary education, certification in Technical Writing, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Minimum 10 years of technical writing experience supporting complex, high-technology products or software-driven systems.
• Demonstrated experience publishing both print and electronic documentation, including HTML and PDF formats.
• Strong leadership or editorial experience, with the ability to mentor team members and coordinate documentation efforts.
• Exceptional writing, editing, and organizational skills, with a keen eye for detail, consistency, and quality.
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel; experience with tools such as MadCap Flare, Adobe FrameMaker, Visio, WebWorks ePublisher, and Jira is an asset.
• Strong technical aptitude, including the ability to understand complex systems, software, and Windows-based environments.
• Excellent analytical, communication, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
• Knowledge of marine navigation systems and concepts is considered a strong asset.
Other: Ability to obtain and maintain security clearance.
